Background
John Vliet Lindsay (1921–2000) was NYC's 103rd Mayor 1966-1973. R-Liberal-Independent who switched to D 1971; sought the 1972 Dem presidential nomination (lost early). Inherited NYC at a moment of urban crisis: 1966 transit strike, 1968 sanitation strike, 1968 teachers strike (Ocean Hill-Brownsville), 1970 racial unrest. Famous for walking into riot zones to defuse tension after MLK's assassination April 4 1968 — credited with keeping NYC calmer than other major cities. Lost mayoral primary 1973; political career effectively over by 1980.
