Lurleen Burns Wallace (1926–1968) was Alabama Governor January 1967-May 1968 — the 3rd woman elected Governor of any state + the first elected as a stand-in for her term-limited husband (George Wallace). Diagnosed with uterine cancer during the campaign; concealed from voters. Died in office May 7, 1968. The Wallaces' 4 children include Peggy Wallace Kennedy (civil-rights reconciliation activist).
