On the record
Saved NYC from 1975 bankruptcy
Background
Hugh Leo Carey (1919–2011) was NY Governor 1975-1982. Inherited the 1975 NYC fiscal crisis — engineered the Municipal Assistance Corporation rescue with Felix Rohatyn, persuaded the federal government to back loan guarantees, and famously dared Gerald Ford with the Daily News headline "Ford to City: Drop Dead." Catholic Brooklyn Dem; 7-term U.S. Rep before Albany. Mended NY's relationship with Wall Street + the federal government during the recovery.
