Background
Michael Stanley Dukakis (b. 1933) was Massachusetts Governor 1975-79 + 1983-91. 1988 Dem presidential nominee; lost to George H.W. Bush after a campaign defined by the Willie Horton ad + the infamous M1 Abrams tank photo. "Massachusetts Miracle" of mid-1980s tech boom. Olympia Snowe's Republican husband Peter G. Snowe was killed in a 1973 car crash; Dukakis as Gov drove a Snowe constituent home from the funeral procession (per family lore).
