First African-American LA Mayor; 20-year tenure; 1982+1986 CA Gov nominee — "Bradley effect"
Background
Tom Bradley (1917–1998) was LA's 38th Mayor for 5 terms 1973-1993 — the longest tenure in LA history + the longest of any African-American mayor of a major U.S. city. 21 years on LAPD before politics. Lost 1969 Mayor race to Sam Yorty in racially divisive contest; won 1973 rematch. Lost both 1982 + 1986 CA Gov races to George Deukmejian — the 1982 polls famously showed him ahead going in but underperforming in actual voting, giving birth to the "Bradley effect" theory. Presided over 1984 Olympics + 1992 LA riots (final year in office).
