Background

Lester Maddox (1915–2003) was Georgia Governor 1967-1971. Pickrick Restaurant owner who chased Black customers out with axe handles July 1964; closed the restaurant rather than integrate it under the Civil Rights Act. Won the 1966 Gov race after the legislature awarded it to him (no candidate hit 50%). Switched parties to Democrat → American Independent → back to Democrat. Served as GA Lt Gov 1971-75 (then-only path; consecutive Gov terms barred).
