Called out AR National Guard 1957 to block Little Rock 9 — Eisenhower federalized 101st Airborne
Background
Orval Faubus (1910–1994) was Arkansas Governor 1955-1967 — the longest tenure in state history. Defining act: ordered the AR National Guard to block 9 Black students from entering Little Rock Central High School Sept 4 1957, prompting Eisenhower to federalize the Guard + send the 101st Airborne. Re-elected 5 more times after the standoff. His AG Bruce Bennett ran the state's segregationist Sovereignty Commission. Considered Bill Clinton's tradition of statewide-Democratic-dominance the antithesis of what he inherited.
