William Joseph Baxley II (b. 1941) was Alabama Attorney General 1971-1979 + Lt Gov 1983-1987. Reopened + prosecuted the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing — convicting Klansman Robert Chambliss in November 1977 for the murder of Carol Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, Addie Mae Collins. "Kiss my ass" letter to KKK Imperial Wizard Robert Shelton became a civil-rights classic. Lost 1978 + 1986 Gov primaries.
